The Romerberg area of town is one of the few places not wiped out by World War II. Tourists can get a feel of what this city used to look like via stepped gabled houses, restored 14th century buildings and the old town hall, Romer, in the northwest corner of the neighborhood. East of Romerberg, the Frankfurter Dom served as the coronation site for the Holy Roman emperors from 1562-1792. A 15th-century Gothic tower, completed in the 1860s, is one of the few structure still standing from the 1944 raids.
