This is a gorgeous city to just wander around. Showing off its medieval roots all over the place, this city oozes charm out of gabled houses, cute canals and old-time Belgian beer. A good place to start exploring is the Markt, the city's heart. This is where Belfort, bell tower, can be found. Tourists have to pay a fee to climb the top. However, one can always just gasp from square level for free.
The nearby Burg square is home to the city hall, stadhuis. The HeiligBloedbasiliek, as the name says, is the Basilica of Holy Blood. This is where a few coagulated drops of Christ's blood are stored and cherished. Hello, paganism!
A 10-minute walk south of the Markt, is home to the begijnhof. This used to be home to a community of unmarried and widowed women. Now, you can check out the 13th-century spread for free.
