Naples is the type of place that has to be seen to be believed. And, the wonder all starts on the streets. A chaotic calamity of activity, people touch, merchants yell, cars make close calls and thieves prey. Be sure to watch your valuables as you jump head first into the fascinating eruption of activity near Mount Vesuvius.
A good place to start exploring is in the historic heart of the city: the Spaccanapoli quarter. Via Vicaria Vecchia which turns into Via San Biagio dei Librai which turns into Via B Croce is the bustling artery of this neighborhood. At the Piazza del Gesu Nuovo, look for the 15th-century Chiesa di Gesu Nuovo and the 14th-century Chiesa di Santa Chiara.
The Duomo on the 'via' of the same name was built in the 13th century though the façade is from the 19th century. Just inside, get your gore on at the Cappella di San Gennaro. This is where the head of Saint Januarius is contained as well as two vials of his congealed blood.
On the waterfront, both Castel Nuovo and Castel dell'Ovo are free to see. The first is a 13-th century edifice overlooking the port with the help of a triumphal arch. The second was originally utilized as a Norman castle and is surrounded by a small fishing village.
