Florence City Information
Learn about the layout of Florence before you get there. We'll also fill you in on where most hostels are found.
City Layout
Florence is small! Most accommodations are located in the center of town, which is quite compact and is best seen by foot. The Duomo and the main train station, Santa Maria Novella, are both smack-dab in the middle of Florence, and the rest of the city unfolds around them.
Cheap hostels and hotels line the Via Nazionale, which runs to the east of the station, and Piazza Santa Maria Novella to the south. The main catwalk of Florence, Via dei Calzaiuoli, runs south from the Duomo and ends at Florence's other main square, Piazza della Signoria where you'll find David's double (a copy) hanging out. Florence doesn't have a metro or subway system, and it's unlikely that you'll take a bus or a cab. So smile, put on your favorite walking shoes and hit the road.
Hostel Overview
If you've spent all day in the line for David's bottom (which, by the way, is well worth it) it's almost a relief to get home. Luckily, hostels are located generally within 15 minutes of Florence's center and are conveniently situated near the city's main bus and train stations. With such a welcoming and friendly atmosphere, Florentine hostels are nearly as satisfying as those delicious biscuit things.
