The simple act of walking around Bologna is breath-taking. There are enough porticoes and atmosphere to keep cheapos happy for days. The center, made up of Piazza Maggiore, is pedestrian-only. The Basilica di San Petronio is a free dedication to the patron saint of Bologna: Petronius. The Palazzo Comunale to the west shows off disparate architecture styles. Just north of the plaza, be sure to check out the bronze-sculpted Fontana del Nettuno at Piazza del Nettuno. To climb the town's tower, Torre Asinelli, requires a fee. However, to look is free.
