Free Attractions

With all the canals, called 'fleets', and the dock, this is fun place to walk around and check out all the goings-on: the Sunday morning Fischmarkt, the bicycles, original St. Pauli girls, etc.

The devastated St-NikolaiKirche, on Ost-West-Strasse, is currently an anti-war memorial. From there, one can walk a few blocks west to the Hauptkirche St Michaelis. Though there is a fee to go up the tower, the baroque building itself is worth taking in.

On Sunday mornings, the Fischmarkt is the place to be. In the port area, right on the Elbe, is the city's oldest market. Inspired hunters can find anything here: not just fish. Even those not in the mood for a search or a purchase, this is still the place to people watch.

The Reeperbahn isn't a place one would normally associate with freee commerce. However, it's worth it just to walk around and see what is happening in Hamburg's version of the Red Light District. If the vortex of a sin city is not for you, the surrounding St. Pauli area might be. Again, not really free, this is the city's entertainment district making it an interesting place to people watch and walk through, if nothing else.
