Free Attractions
Right in the center of town, in the heart of the Petit Ring, lies the Grand Place. This is the perfect introduction to the city. This is where Hotel de Ville, the only building to escape bombardment from the French in 1695 has been attracting frugal tourists for centuries. One block northeast sits the indoor shopping arcade, the Galeries St Hubert.
To go inside the Musee des Instruments de Musique, housing one of the planet's largest collections of musical instruments, requires a fee. However, the building itself, the Old English building, is worth a look from the outside as it is a splendid sample of Art Nouveau architecture.
And, of course, who can forget the Manneken Pis fountain? This is the famous, or infamous, depending on your point of view, peeing boy statue that is talked about the world over. In lieu of buying one of the hundreds of incarnations of the boy found on bottle openers, patches, shot glasses, chocolate and lace, simply see the real thing yourself and take a picture with a camera for free.
