Innsbruck City Information
Get the low-down on Innsbruck's layout before you arrive. Read on for a brief description of the town and its hostels.
City Layout
When it comes to being a tourist in Innsbruck, it's all happening east of the Inn River in the Old Town (Altstadt). Most attractions and accommodations are here, in the heart of the city, are wrapped in a ring made up of the streets Marktgraben, Burggraben, Rennweg and Herzog Otto Strasse. This baroque part of town goes pedestrian-only after 10:30 AM, making it easier to take in the beautiful architecture above without worrying about traffic below. The two bridges crossing the river are the Alte Innbrucke, branching off from central Old Town, just south of the Goldenes Dachl, and the Universitatssbrucke on the south side of Innrain, just north of Neue Universitat.
Hostel Overview
Travel by bus, tram, bike or skies down the cobbled streets of this exquisite mountain city snuggled in the shadow of the Tyrolean Alps. Two official HI hostels offer reasonably priced dorms for about €12 a night. Some hostels close in June, however student accommodation is made available to backpackers during July and August. Online hostels offer beds year-round, but search early for a prime location.
