During the academic school year, the Hostel Domus Civica—located in Venice’s San Polo neighborhood&mdas; is a women's college residence. But if you’re backpacking through the canalled city between June 1st and September 30th, prepare to grab a cheap bunk here.
The place has character: remnants of the onetime convent include an impressive crucifix in the lobby, long hallways and high ceilings. Simple rooms, which range in size and capacity, can be reserved privately or dorm-style. The warm walnut furnishings are basic. One reviewer called the bathrooms here “whimsical.”
There’s a big TV lounge and library on-site and the staff is friendly. High ceilings keep the place cool in the summertime. The hostel does have a 12:30 a.m. curfew.

San Polo is a less touristy, more diverse side of Venice. Here you’ll find outdoor markets, intimate restaurants, and beautiful houses. San Polo is located north of the Rialto Bridge and San Marco.
