The Freedom Traveller is located about a ten-minute walk north of Rome's Termini Station. Its location doesn’t boast much, but the hostel itself packs on the extras. From free croissants and coffee at breakfast to weekly pizza parties, this is a solid pick for backpackers visiting the Eternal City.

Both dorms (with shared bathrooms) and private rooms (en suite facilities) are available. Free Wi-Fi, linens, air conditioning and luggage storage (individual lockers) are included in all nightly rates. If booking a private room, guests will have a flat-screen TV and towels too.

Now back to those extras. Every Monday and Thursday night the hostel hosts a free pizza and wine party. Additionally for just €3, you can book a seat at the Saturday night pasta dinner (glass of wine included too!). There’s no curfew.

Although this hostel is in a good location in relation to the train station we could not really recommend it to other travellers. There was a nasty smell from the bathroom which was most off putting, the guy who seemed to run the place gave me the creeps and the free walking tours advertised were not running.

The area north of Rome’s Termini Station is by no means the most charming part of the city. However, it is packed with affordable, and often charming, hotels. Walk west to reach the Piazza della Republica.
