Since I'm totally high maintenance, but have to stay in hostels like the rest of us, I have these tips for the glamourous types out there:
-Pick up a bunch of free samples when you're at the mall or shopping and stow them for your next trip. They come in really handy.
-Bring two laundry bags (a tip I found in a book once) and use one for your dirty clothes and one for your trip to the shower. I throw everything in it that I need and hang it from the shower head.
-TRY to pack light; I always have trouble packing, so I take a pair of shorts (if it's warm) and lots of tank tops. I don't normally pack jeans when I'm headed to a beachy location. Instead, I take capris or palatzzo pants since they can fold up and roll into a backpack easily (especially if they're linen) and they are SO comfortable. I take lots of wrinkle-free dresses (think jersey knit) that can fold into the size of a tube of toothpaste.
This might sound strange, but I always take baby wipes with me when I travel and/or visit hostels. I use them for everything. On the train, to wipe off my water bottle, to refresh my face, if a toilet seat is icky...and so much more! They smell good too.
Are you kidding, Bettucci, I love baby wipes. I took them with me on a month long camping trip and they were a life saver. Oh, wait, this is the glamour page. Febreze it, baby. I love Febreze because not only does it allow me to pack less clothing, but 'dry-clean' only clothes are fair game. Wear it once, spray on a little Febreze, and wear again.
Something else to consider, even for the budget-cautious traveler- You can almost always buy toiletries elsewhere, so don't bring the ones along that you think you may need, but aren't really sure.
