You should definitely check on this. I got so busted last time I was overseas and used my ATM card. Each time, my bank back home was charging $4. Try doing that about 25 times over the course of 2-3 weeks...ouch! Ask your bank. xxxt many stores take travelers checks anymore.
Funny you should ask. I just received documents in the mail regarding a class action law suit filed against a certain monster bank overcharging for international ATM fees from 1996-2006. However, when I was in Hungary in 2007, I still felt the crunch. Ask the bank...then decide if you trust them enough to take their word for it. If a recording tells you instead of a person, that might be a bad sign.
I think you can get some sort of ATM card these days from banks and you load it up before you travel with whatever currency you wish. Sounds like the way to go I think!
I would NEVER take travellers checks anymore unless your paranoid about losing your wallet whilst travelling. People get so ripped off when cashing in travellers checks. I almost saw a fight break out in Prague because a guy was pissed that the check cashing place was charging a bad rate and a service charge. I would only take my credit cards and cash card.
